Our Sunshine Mission

You're invited

Our mission

Clarity, intention, and better choices, one intentional step at a time.

There is no universal definition of “non-toxic.” Across industries and regulations, the term is often vague, unprotected, and shaped by what is considered “acceptable.” But acceptable is not the same as good, and it is not the standard we use at Sunshine.

In the Sunshine Community, we hold a different standard. A personal standard. A lived-experience standard. One grounded in clarity, care, and honesty, and in a genuine desire to guide better choices without fear or overwhelm. This reflects our values of transparency, calm communication, and practical guidance.

Our definition of "non-toxic"

No “non-toxic” labelling

There is currently no universal or legally standardised definition of the terms “non-toxic” or “toxic-free.” In many cases, these labels are used for products that fall within an “acceptable exposure threshold” established by national or regional regulatory authorities. In other words, a product may be legally sold because it does not exceed a permitted toxicity limit, not because it is entirely without potential biological impact.

Our standards and evaluation process (“A better choice”)

At Sunshine Community, the regulatory “minimum” is not sufficient. Our standard goes beyond what is merely “allowed” or “acceptable.” We are committed to introducing our community to products and services that reflect high levels of safety, transparency, and ingredient integrity. Each product on the platform is subject to careful and ongoing review of its ingredient composition, sourcing, and potential biological impact.

In this process, we consult a range of independent scientific databases, advocacy organisations, and public resources, including The Toxic Free Foundation, EWG Skin Deep, MADE SAFE, COSDNA, Silent Spring Institute, the National Library of Medicine, Think Dirty, ScienceDirect, Ecogolik, and AskREACH.

In addition, we conduct our own ingredient research through PMC PubMed Central and cross-referencing. Our approach remains evidence-based. We stay updated on EU ingredient regulations and safety rulings, monitor emerging research and expert insights, consider community feedback and lived experiences, and evaluate cumulative exposure and long-term use.

Founder Leonora Bernstein’s work in environmental health has been shaped through years of research, education, and guidance from several environmental health experts, whose work has helped deepen her understanding of the complexity of environmental chemical exposure, historical chemical use, cumulative burden, and the evolving relationship between modern environments and long-term human health. That perspective has further strengthened Sunshine Community’s commitment to nuance over sensationalism, because while environmental health deserves to be taken seriously, it should also be approached with calm, thoughtfulness, and perspective.

We recognise that scientific understanding evolves, and our assessment process is therefore dynamic and continuously reviewed as new data becomes available. While zero risk cannot be scientifically guaranteed in any manufactured product, we define our curated products and brands as “a better choice” for you and your home environment, based on the best available evidence and ongoing evaluation.

We are human

We do not claim to know everything.
Instead, we seek better alternatives. Better ways to support and elevate everyday life. Better products, holistic practitioners, and brands committed to human wellbeing.

This is the heart of our philosophy: better, not perfect.
We are not perfect, and neither are you.
And that is the beauty of it all.

Why this matters

Because your health matters

Sunshine Community exists to offer a space where research, intention, community, and humanity meet.
An invitation to explore, connect, and choose differently.

We help our members navigate environmental toxin exposures, everyday products, and lifestyle decisions with clarity - without fear, perfectionism, or overwhelm. Rather than chasing “non-toxic,” we focus on what is realistic and meaningful: better choices, made step by step.
